Biggy miss out on play-off spot

So Biggy finish third in the league table behind the two sides that had both beaten them at home and away.

But after the poor start way back in September and October it is a good result to the campaign. And realistically have Biggleswade the depth of players in all positions to compete in Midlands 1?

It was a tense thrilling game on Saturday that even stirred the hearts of the few neutrals that were present.

Conditions were good for a fast moving game with a dry pitch and warm sunshine. But there was a strong breeze blowing from the south west that gave a distinct advantage to the side playing with it at their backs.

Biggleswade had the benefit in the first half and through the trusty boot of Frenchman Alex Daran back from a break in his homeland.

Wellingborough’s backline were all of ample proportions unlike Biggleswade where only Loz Hutchinson looks well fed. As such the visitors had the upper hand although the direct approach may have been more successful than the endless series of moves in their repertoire.

Alex Daran put Biggleswade ahead with a couple of good penalty kicks before Wellingborough got the first of their tries.

The conversion went wide although there was confusion as the touch judges had different opinions. The referee ruled it was not successful.

A further successful penalty from almost the 10-metre line stretched Biggleswade’s lead and reminded the visitors that to err was foolish.

But turning round just four points ahead the score didn’t look nearly enough for the wind advantage.

Biggleswade had threatened largely through the bulk of Hutchinson who punched holes in the defence.

But a niggling hamstring and a lack of support at the crucial moment denied Biggleswade a try.

The Biggleswade pack had the upper hand in the tight scrums so that it was a surprise when awarded a penalty wide out but near to the try line that they opted to kick for a lineout which had been a lottery all afternoon. It allowed Wellingborough to break out and led to their second try which was converted to give them a three point lead.

But Biggleswade bounced back with their favourite move up the blind-side from a set scrum. Number eight Michael Hall fed scrum-half Michael Trigg who made the initial break committing the winger to give Lawrence Hutchinson the scoring pass for a try under the posts.

Now behind again, the visitors launched one attack after another recycling the ball one way and then the other until Biggleswade ran out of defenders. The converted try put them ahead and they retained the slender lead until the final whistle.
