Opening day defeats for Waresley and Blunham

Waresley and Blunham opened their Cambs & Hunts Tucker Gardner Division One campaigns with defeats on Saturday.

At Waresley, the hosts put visitors Ramsey into bat. Alex Watkiss took two early wickets to restrict them to 32-2 but Ramsey went on to make 250 all out.

In reply Waresley made an encouraging start with Charlie Lewis (22) and Alex Scully (34) putting on 54 for the first wicket. But beyond them only Ian Donald with 33 really troubled the scorers and the home side tumbled to 121-9, a 129 run defeat.

Blunham fielded first at Eaton Socon and managed to bowl the hosts out for 208 with Wayne Goldsmith talking 3-47, Geoffrey Fitzgerald 2-40 and Michael Pickard 2-41.

Ross Adams made the biggest contribution for Blunham with the bat. But although five other players made double figures none could get beyond 20, and Adams was left unbeaten on 59 when the innings closed at 170, 38 runs short.

In friendly action Biggleswade Town were comfortable winners over Ickwell on The Green on Sunday. Ickwell chose to field and held Biggleswade to 208-7. Matt Twigg top scored with 41 off 37 balls while Daniel Denton took three wickets.

James Gauge roared in with three early wickets as the home side’s reply stuttered to 1-3. Ross Fensome rallied the innings with an unbeaten 73 but Ickwell were all out for 115, Ben Bond chipping in with three wickets.

Ickwell IIs earned a six wicket win at neighbours Old Warden on Saturday.

Old Warden chose to bat first and opener Ross Sample led the way with 50 before being bowled. The rest of the order couldn’t match that, and Sam Barrow was the star bowler with 3-17 as Warden were restricted to 120-9.

Ickwell openers Matt Hamilton and Jamie Barnes meant business and piled on the runs. Hamilton was out for 51 but Barnes was unbeaten on 42 as the visitors reached their target in 28 overs.
