Shield replay joy for Potton’s cricketers

Potton Town will host Waresley this coming Monday for a place in the final of this season’s East Beds Senior Shield following a comfortable ten wicket replay victory.

Just seven days after rain forced the abandonment of their quarter-final match at Blunham – when they were edging close to victory – on Monday Potton completed the job in convincing fashion.

Having won the toss and with the threat of rain showers and thunderstorms forecast, Potton put Blunham in to bat first in a 12-six ball overs match on a damp track.

With Stephen Williams (2-10) and a Ben Howlett run out taking care of openers Ashley Grimes and Matt Benson with the scoreboard on 2-10, Connor Heaps (23) and Ben Spendlove (29) displayed the most resistance but at 75-7 at the close, Blunham knew that the total would never be enough.

And so it proved as Potton’s opening pair of Sean Stevens (36 not out) and Williams (42 not out) took just 37 balls to reach a winning 78 without loss, the winning boundary coming off Josh Sadd’s only delivery.

Last night (Thursday), Senior Shield holders Eaton Socon were due to host Ampthill Town for a place in this year’s final which is scheduled for Wednesday, July 13 at a ground to be decided by the competition’s executive ... but it’s likely to be Ickwell.
