Cup final heartbreak as Biggleswade are beaten by Stockwood Park

There was no happy ending to the campaign as Biggleswade went down at home for the first time this season in a narrow 11-8 defeat to Stockwood Park in the Bedfordshire County Cup final.

Biggleswade scored as early as 25 seconds in for a dream start, but they could not find a way through a determined defence to add any more tries to their season’s total of more than 140.

Having beaten Stockwood Park twice already this season in the league, Biggleswade started as favourites and this top billing soon appeared justified with the hosts’ early try.

Good work by the forwards gave Biggleswade a springboard to attack. Ryan Spence made the break and fed fellow centre Lawrence Hutchinson who carved through the defence to touch down.

Biggleswade seemed on top and were bossing the scrums although not getting the reward for their dominance.

Winger Taig Norman was immense, cutting attackers off at the knees and using his speed to cover any threat.

Fellow winger Sam Stock had few opportunities to show his speed but, when he did, he also looked very threatening.

Biggleswade had a couple of penalty chances to increase their lead – including one from their own half – but Harry Worboy’s effort was just short.

Turning round just five points ahead, there was still everything to play for. Biggleswade missed another penalty attempt and then Stockwood did the same as the nerve jangled.

Finally the visitors cut the deficit with a penalty, before the crucial moment came which turned the game in Stockwood’s favour.

An innocent looking scrum was lost on the 22 and the Park number eight picked up and crashed over in the corner.

As the game entered its final stages, Biggleswade were penalised again apparently for holding on after the tackle. The kick was successful leaving Biggleswade little time to score again.

The result was a disappointing end to a cracking season that has seen Biggleswade return to Midlands 2 after just one season.
