Another win for in-form United while Waders also win but FC lose out

Biggleswade United maintained their promotion chase with a 2-1 win at Tring Athletic on Saturday.

With leaders Winslow winning one of their two games in hand on Tuesday night, Biggleswade are now six points behind them having played two matches fewer, but wins remain crucial whether in the title hunt or when it comes to securing a play-off place in what is a close battle for the top five spots.

Saturday’s win came thanks to Scott Metcalfe and Liam O’Neil’s goals, that being United’s fifth win in six games in all competitions and their 13th league game unbeaten.

Boss Kane Dougherty said afterwards: “It was a tough game as we knew it would be and when we turned up and saw the pitch one of my main concerns was to make sure we didn’t get any serious injuries.

"The ref said there wasn’t a pitch inspection and that if there was then he probably would have called it off earlier but he didn’t want to after he’d got here.

"It was an exciting game, perhaps not in terms of the technical football but it was a real battle out there and the boys showed real character.”

United will host second-from-bottom Crawley Green this weekend.

*Biggleswade FC had a frustrating weekend as they were beaten 3-2 at home by Welwyn Garden City.

Dan Bond and Temi Akinbusoye scored for FC, the latter a late penalty, but Welwyn were never behind and took the three points to leave FC third in the league and eight points behind second-placed Hitchin.

This weekend, FC go to London Lions.

*Biggleswade Town are three points behind FC with a game in hand after winning 2-0 at Stotfold thanks to goals from Cyrus Babaie and Coree Wilson.

The Waders now prepare to host Aylesbury United on Saturday before they then go to Flackwell Heath on Tuesday night, both of those sides currently in the bottom half of the SPL Division One Central standings.
