Arlesey leapfrog Fleet with win in final game

Arlesey Town ended a disappointing Southern League Division One Central campaign on a high with a 2-1 victory at Fleet.

Saturday’s success saw them leapfrog the Hampshire side and finish in 16th place, well clear of the relegation zone.

Arlesey started brightly as Nathan Olukanmi shot against the bar but it was the home side that scored first from a free kick and a good volley that gave Nick Thompson no chance. Fleet could have added to their lead but were thwarted by a great save from Thompson.

In the second half, playing down the slope, Arlesey looked better through the middle and on 52 minutes a great move saw Christian Tavernier step inside to slot past the home keeper to level the scores.

And Arlesey grabbed a deserved winner with just four minutes, Jevani Brown firing a superb volley past the keeper.

In the division’s play off final St Ives play Rushden on Monday, May 2 to see who will join Kings Langley in being promoted to the Southern League Premier.
