Arlesey win appeal over controversial victory

The Blues won the Southern League Division One Central fixture 1-0 in November due to a late controversial goal.

Following an injury to a Ware player the referee awarded an unopposed drop ball. Arlesey’s Nathan Olukanmi tapped the ball back toward the Ware keeper who let it run past him and roll into the net.

After some debate on the pitch the goal was allowed to stand although it was later confirmed that FIFA had changed the rule in 2012 meaning you cannot score direct from a drop ball.

Following an investigation the league decided that the game should be replayed.

However Arlesey lodged an appeal with the FA citing the long-standing rule that the referee’s decision on the day is final.

Club officials attended an appeal at Wembley on Monday and the FA upheld the club’s appeal meaning the 1-0 victory will stand.
