The Waders were due to host United at the Carlsberg Stadium on Tuesday night. But 24 hours earlier the Leicestershire club effectively ceased to exist after being wound up following a court hearing.

A brief statement on the club’s website said: “Further to the winding up petition issued by the Downes Executive Pension Fund against Hinckley United Football Club Limited, the directors attended the court hearing at Birmingham where the winding up petition was granted.

“The board would like to thank its supporters, sponsors and shareholders for their support in these sad and difficult times.”

On the Waders website the club said: “Having spoken with the Hinckley United Secretary today I understand that every effort had been made to continue but the obstacles were too great in the end.

“It is always a sad situation to see a club disappear in this manner and I would like to extend the sympathy and best wishes of Biggleswade Town to the many people who worked hard to keep the club going in very difficult circumstances.”

The Waders’ next game is the FA Cup clash with Leatherhead on Saturday.
