Chris Nunn is “buzzing” as a new season dawns for Biggleswade Town.

The Waders kick-off their Pitching In Southern League Premier Central with a trip to St Ives Town tomorrow (Saturday).

And, after an encouraging finish to pre-season, Nunn is looking forward to what lies ahead.

It looks to be a tricky test on the opening day with St Ives having made some eye-catching signings over the summer.

And while Nunn concedes his own squad could still do with a couple of additions, he insists Biggleswade with be looking to get off to a positive start.

“It’s brilliant to be back and I am buzzing and really looking forward to it,” the Waders boss said.

“For me, personally, it’s been three years since I have had a first game of the season so I can’t wait to get going.

“I think we are a couple short still and what’s caused us a bit of a problem is that the National League starts two weeks later than us.

“You can generally pick up one of two players from those clubs once the season starts so there were two or three I was hoping to get but they are holding out to try to play at the higher level.

“So we are a bit short but, for where we are financially, I feel we have recruited well.

“We have kept four clean sheets in our last four friendlies and we will be trying to make ourselves hard to beat.

“I don’t think you need to be a rocket scientist to realise that St Ives have got a few quid this year with some of the players they have signed.

“It will be a different St Ives to ones we have faced over the last few years but I am sure that will bring a bit of pressure on them.

“We will have a gameplan and we will go there trying to win the game, of course.”

Nunn, however, had some choice words for the powers-that-be after discovering his team’s opponents for Tuesday night’s Emirates FA Cup first qualifying round clash.

The Waders will have to make the long trek to take on league rivals Leiston after they were paired together in Monday’s draw.

And it’s far from ideal as far as Nunn is concerned.

“Sometimes football gets in a bubble and it doesn’t understand what is happening in the real world,” he said.

“Considering the climate we are in, for us to get a draw one week before the game which gives us a three-hour coach journey on a Tuesday night is absolutely and completely ridiculous.

“They are asking lads to have half a day off and not get home until the early hours, all at a week’s notice.

“It’s not about playing Leiston, we’re happy to play anyone. The draw is a draw. I just don’t agree with it at such short notice.”

Biggleswade FC begin their Southern League Division One Central campaign with a home clash against AFC Dunstable tomorrow.

Biggleswade beat Histon 1-0 in the preliminary round of the FA Cup last weekend thanks to a fine goal, which saw nine players touch the ball in a 13-pass move before Alan Fleming converted Adam Hunt’s cross.

As a result, Biggleswade were handed an away tie at Ely City in the first qualifying round, which will be played next Tuesday evening.

Biggleswade United will turn their attention to the Buildbase FA Vase this weekend after a tough week.

United were beaten 4-0 at Cambridge City in the FA Cup preliminary round last Saturday and that was followed by a 3-2 home defeat to Newport Pagnell Town in their first Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division game of the season as goals from Ethan Flanagan and Jordan Wright proved to be in vain.

United will now hope to bounce back in the first qualifying round of the Vase tomorrow when they make the short trip to Potton United.
