Crucial victories for Biggleswade clubs in play-off pushes

All three Biggleswade clubs maintained their play-off pushes with victories this week.

Town and FC have identical playing records in the SPL Division One Central and are level on 62 points in third and fourth-place respectively, only the Waders’ superior goal difference separating them.

Jimmy Martin’s men ran out 2-1 winners at Rayners Lane on Saturday, Coree Wilson and Manny Dahie with goals in each half after the hosts had taken an early lead.

This weekend, Town host bottom-of-the-table AFC Dunstable.

FC, meanwhile, had Ryan Gray’s 69th minute winner to thank for their 1-0 win at home to Leverstock Green on Saturday.

They are back in action this weekend with a tough trip to league leaders Leighton Town who are six points clear at the top of the table.

Biggleswade United suffered a blow to their SSML Premier Division title hopes as they were beaten 2-1 at home by play-off contenders Risborough Rangers on Saturday.

And with Winslow United, who topped the table prior to the weekend, also losing, it opened up the opportunity for Haringey Borough to go top which they seized upon.

However, United bounced back on Tuesday night with a 2-1 success over AFC Welwyn thanks to a fine Kade Bagge strike and Newman Carney’s late winner. United are four points behind Haringey with a game in hand, while second-placed Winslow are level on points with United but with two games in hand on the leaders.

Boss Kane Dougherty said: “It was a really important win and good to bounce back after Saturday’s disappointment.

"Welwyn started really well although I don’t think it was a penalty for their goal. They were then really hard to break down but we were patient and fully deserved the win having been the better side."

United face trips to Sawbridgeworth on Saturday and then Harpenden Town next Tuesday night.
