Energetic Eagles soar to impressive Wembley win

The Eagles were buoyant from their well-earned point at Berkhamsted at the weekend. The game started at an electric pace as both teams looked to impose themselves on the game – Stotfold pressing high up the field with intensity that belied their current league position whilst Wembley were fighting to contain the home side’s workrate.

After just nine minutes Stotfold’s Jake Long played a ball over the top into the right hand channel straight into the path of Tom Oram. He put in a cross-shot that flew into the far corner of the net. Only Tommy will know if he meant it!

Stotfold’s tails were up and with quarter of an hour gone the pressure told as Jake Long got across the front post from a Drew Cardines corner and met the ball with a sweet firm header for 2-0.

Stotfold then took their foot off the gas and let Wembley back in by conceding possession cheaply in midfield. The ball was worked out to the right, and whipped across for a decent lash into the top corner giving Adam Harpur in the Stotfold goal no chance.

This only served to kickstart the Eagles back into action as they upped the tempo again. They got their rewards as Ben L’Honore squeezed the centre half, gained possession, ran in on goal and slotted home.

It was an excellent half of football with Stotfold proving that their position of 15th in the league is a false one.

It was more of the same in the second half from Stotfold who started with the right tempo, pressing high with intensity but without getting any reward.

Chances fell to second half substitutes Anthony Wright, Redan Zekri and L’Honore who all went close with good efforts on target but with no reward.

The second half lacked the goalmouth action and chances of the first but not through any lack of effort from both teams.

Stotfold go into Saturday’s derby at Biggleswade United in good form. They follow this with a home game against Holmer Green on Tuesday night.
