Guillem Balague: history matters at Biggleswade Re-United

Here at Biggleswade United we have always been a very hospitable club. Now however we need to try to limit our generosity to our guests to before and after the game and not during it.

Against London Tigers we fell behind once again and it was only due to the battling spirit we have in this side that we managed to fight back and earn a point. Too often this season distractions and lack of cutting edge upfront have cost us dear and we are addressing this in training.

But while earlier on this season we might well have capitulated, these days we are showing we know how to suffer to get points. Have faith, we will get there.

As part of our celebration for non-league day we also had a special event for former players and coaches at the club, effectively a Biggleswade Re-United day.

We heard a number of stories about many managers, some of them sadly no longer with us, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

It was also a perfect opportunity for us to thank all those people behind the scenes like David, Tracey and Heather without whom the club simply would not exist. My personal gratitude and that of everyone at the club knows no bounds.

More than that however it was an important day because it established the idea with our current crop of players that there is a history with the club and it is vital that we honour and respect that.

To be part of that story here and now is as wonderful as it is humbling, and what unfolded in the clubhouse was as important as anything that happened durung the game.

On a sadder note Steve Kendall and Martin Guildford have announced they will be leaving their posts as assistant coaches of the under 14s after around seven years at the club. Increased work commitments for both of them mean they feel they can no longer give their young charges all the support they have provided in the past. They leave with our eternal thanks and best wishes.

We would appeal to any local coaches out there that would like to join us to contact the club: [email protected]

On the pitch we face two important matches at St Margaretsbury on Saturday and at Berkhamsted on Tuesday night. See you there.
