Header sinks Gamlingay after they push league leaders all the way

A late headed goal from Luke Upcott denied Gamlingay of a hard fought and fully deserved point against the Cambs Kershaw Premier leaders on Saturday.

Great Shelford, unbeaten in their previous eight games in all competitions, had the better of the possession but struggled to break down a gritty United defence.

They thought they had taken the lead when Thomas Barham’s curled effort looked destined for the far top corner, but Aaron Loney was at full stretch to tip the ball over the crossbar.

At the other end, Loney’s long goal kicks were causing problems and Jamie Steele was unfortunate not to capitalise when the ball went straight through to him but the keeper and centre half managed to scramble the ball away between them.

The visitors almost went in ahead at the break when Conor Smith broke quickly down the left before squaring the ball to James Worboys who saw his left footed effort from the edge of the box come back of the post.

The second half followed in much the same vein with Shelford looking to break the visiting defence down while Gamlingay looked to break.

United can feel a little hard done by that they were not awarded a penalty on the hour mark when Sam Bonham was bundled over in the box just as it seemed certain he was going to nod home from three yards.

Nick Impey had a great chance to put the hosts in front with a quarter of an hour left, however his attempted lob went straight into the chest of Loney.

The only goal of the game came from a corner with less than five minutes remaining. Luke Upcott lost his man and was able to head home unmarked to give the hosts their fifth straight win.

Man of the match was awarded to Sam Bonham who lost a tooth for the cause.

Gamlingay host Fowlmere on Saturday at 2pm.
