Hoenes hits hat-trick as Waders beat high-flying Slough

The in-form striker added to the two goals he scored on Saturday as the Waders recorded a deserved victory over a side with the fourth best away record in the division.

This was another impressive attacking display by the home side. However just as importantly the home defence, keeper - and yes, woodwork - stood firm when a Slough onslaught finally arrived midway through the second half.

Both sides had early shouts for penalties. Slough players claimed a handball in the box, while at the other end Hoenes went down under a challenge but all appeals were waved away.

Waders had done most of the early pressing with a couple of chances on goal. However they took the lead on 13 minutes in slightly fortuitous fashion as the ball came out to Hoenes and his shot took a big deflection on its way past the Slough keeper.

Biggleswade remained on top, the lively Robbie Parker having one shot deflected for a corner and Hoeness firing wide.

Slough were largely restricted to balls in from set pieces that the defence dealt with comfortably. The one nervy moment for the hosts came just before the break when Ian Brown saved well from a free kick.

Biggleswade began the second half strongly. Craig Daniel shot wide from the angle while Hoenes had the chance to lob the keeper from distance but couldn’t get the height on his shot and it was saved.

With an hour gone it was now Slough’s turn to dominate. From one corner the ball came back across the box and James Dobson’s curling effort smacked against the crossbar.

Just two mintues later Brown pulled off an excellent reflex save to deny Callum Bunting’s header from point blank range and Dobson followed up to smash the ball against the bar again.

It was certainly a reprieve and Slough were made to pay on 81 minutes. As Biggleswade played the ball forward, the last Slough defender slipped and once Hoenes had controlled the ball he raced clear on goal, sidefooting home past Paul Strudley.

That looked to be it but with three minutes remaining the visitors sloppily gave the ball away at the back and Hoenes nipped in to roll the ball in past the keeper for his hat-trick.

Waders visit Dunstable Town on Saturday.
