Kelly's killer shot seals excellent Potton win

A much understrength Potton side battled well against second placed ON Chenecks on Saturday to win 2-1 and inflict only their sixth league defeat this season.

Already without four players who are out injured for the rest of this season, United also lost six of the regular squad. They had to ask two players to return from university to make up a squad of just 13 players.

In the first 20 minutes Chenecks dominated play with Ben Lewington and Ben Diamond all having shots saved by Craig Lewis.

In reply a through ball from Sam Kelly found John Bailey who put a volley just wide of the goal.

Then in the 24th minute George Melrose was fouled 25 yards out and Calum Forster’s free kick took a deflection and finished in the net to give Potton an unexpected lead.

From a dangerous cross Sam Watkins headed goalwards but it was deflected wide by Marc Umney’s head for a corner.

Something must have been said in the Chenecks dressing room at half time because they came out strongly in the second half with a shot from Lewington that was pushed wide -

then Montec Dore fired a free kick wide.

Umney had a shot from long range that was saved by keeper James Goff. Bailey had two attempts from distance that also went over the bar.

But in the 77th minute Potton had two attempts at clearing the ball before it fell to Lewington who turned and levelled the scores with a fine shot.

Potton then went on the defence and Diamond forced a good save from Lewis.

But in the first minute of injury time Kelly collected the ball and from 30 yards out his excellent shot flew over the keeper and under the bar to win the game for Potton.
