The Reds started strongly and put together some fine passing football, made possible by a well grassed good surface.

In the 12th minute this paid off when a passing movement from Pateman out wide left to Mallett unlocked the Broadfields defence with a pin point pass to Brooks who was upended in the penalty area.

Up stepped Sean Murray to slam home the spot-kick for the opening goal.

Further Langford pressure followed without really creating any scoring chances. Then in a swift breakaway in the 23rd minute Broadfields’ Somers put Billy Smith in the clear for him to equaliser from close range.

Broadfields pushed forward and dominated, with Callanan shooting over from a free-kick, then seeing another free-kick hit a defender and squirm wide for a corner.

The Reds started the second half strongly, with Vooght bringing a great save out of Dyos in the Broadfields goal, then Brooks had a run but shot over from 15 yards. The game moved from end to end without either team able to fashion a good scoring opportunity.

Then as they do so often Langford fell to a sucker punch. In the 90th minute, Vooght again missed a scoring chance, Broadfields cleared long to Spinks who played in Somers whose shot hit a defender and spun over the line for a fortunate winner.

Langford’s next match is away to Crawley Green (at Barton Rover’s ground) in SSML Division 1 on Wednesday, March 9.
