Late heartbreak for United at Brampton

Gamlingay started brightly and it was the visitors who broke the deadlock on the half hour mark when Davidson latched on to a lofted through-ball from Tom Ray and clipped the ball over the oncoming keeper.

However, Brampton pulled level before the half when stand-in keeper Mark Brookman and Dominic Ascroft-Walker collided while trying to clear a cross which allowed George Cresswell to stroke the loose ball home.

Gamlingay started the second half strongly as they played some of their best football in recent weeks, but the found themselves falling behind against the run of play when Bonham brought down the Brampton forward inside the box and Gareth Owen converted the resulting penalty.

Falling behind resulted in a shift around for the visitors as they went in search of an equaliser, and it eventually came in stoppage time when Davidson laid the ball back to Bonham on the edge of the box and the centre-half left the keeper with no chance and he sent a pile driver of a strike arrowing into the far corner of the netL.

There was, however, one final twist in the match as Brampton scored a last gasp winner to take all three points.

Substitute Simon Linnell’s cross from the right evaded everyone, came back off the post and found its way into the net off of the unfortunate Nathan Macrow’s face.

The result was harsh on Gamlingay, who battled right to the very end and played arguably their best football of the season for a large spell of the game.
