Play-off Biggleswade derby is on the cards

Biggleswade FC and Biggleswade Town could well face each other in next week’s SPL Division One Central play-off semi-final - providing the latter win their game this weekend.

FC’s third place is already secured meaning they will have home advantage for the semi-final, barring a mathematical miracle should Hitchin Town – three points ahead – lose their final two games (the first played on Wednesday night after this week’s Chronicle went to press) and FC win at Flackwell Heath and overturn a plus-16 goal difference in Hitchin’s favour.

Biggleswade Town then need to see off visitors Marlow on Saturday to secure fourth place, with a draw or a defeat leaving the door open for fifth-placed Thame United to leap-frog them if they win at Hitchin on Saturday, thus meaning Town would themselves take on Hitchin in the play-offs.

Last weekend, FC were in fine form as they ran out 6-1 winners at home to Beaconsfield Town with both Adam Hunt and Dan Bond scoring hat-tricks.

Hunt’s diving header opened the scoring on eight minutes before he struck again soon afterwards with a low shot into the corner of the net.

Beaconsfield reduced the arrears through Jack Esiri on 27 minutes but FC opened up a 3-1 lead on the stroke of half-time with a superb finish from Bond.

The fourth came on 52 minutes when Rio Martucci set up Bond for his second, before the Marsh twins combined to create Bond’s hat-trick goal.

The win was rounded off when Hunt was allowed to take an 85th minute penalty and he converted for his hat-trick and the sixth FC goal.

Town, meanwhile, were beaten 3-0 at Thame United which moved the hosts to within a point of the Waders in the table.

With Leighton Town being champions, relegation matters in the SPL Division One Central are also decided, with Enfield, Northwood, Rayners Lane and AFC Dunstable all confirmed as relegated although Dunstable will soon be folding to merge with Dunstable Town during the summer.
