Potton lose in first Rutland visit

For their first ever league visit to Rutland Potton came away empty handed after a 1-0 loss to Oakham.

In the first half Potton missed some good chances and in the second half Oakham hit the post twice before scoring the only goal of the match in the 76th minute.

Potton’s squad was further depleted with Gary Ansell-Carter (holiday) and George Kiely (work) unavailable and Potton introduced new signing Bradleigh Smith on the subs bench.

Ben Eason tried a long shot that went over the bar before Sam Kelly worked his way forward but shot wide. Marc Umney collected the ball and made a good run before shooting wide. Lewis Leckie then had a long shot that also went over the bar. Umney saw his shot saved by keeper John Featham before at the other end Craig Lewis saved well from a header from Riichard Nelson. Potton had a good passing move down the left that ended with Mark Ansell-Carter shooting just wide of the post. A centre from Daryl Wisbey found Umney unmarked in the penalty area but he scuffed his shot wide. A poor back pass was intercepted by Kenny Smith and with only the keeper to beat he hurried his shot that went past the post. Leckie had a shot well blocked by the Potton defence and Umney made another run only to see his shot deflected wide. Just before half time a good centre from Stewart Lambre eluded everyone.

Early in the second half a good run by Benjamin Wasson hit the post and rebounded to safety. Wisbey had a header go wide of the post before a shot from Umney was saved by Featham From a free kick Gavin Cooke headed goalwards to see Lewis push the ball onto the post and safety. Wisbey headed over from a corner and then in the 76th minute a cross was headed into the net by the unmarked Adam Rothery to give Oakham the lead. Potton were awarded a free kick 25 yards out and Calum Forster saw his low effort saved by Featham. In the closing minutes Sven Hart shot over the bar when well placed.

On Saturday Potton face another tough match when they entertain second placed Northampton On Chenecks at The Hutchinson Hollow.
