Saturday football: Wins for Waders, United and Reds

Two goals from Stotfold’s Sean Herr were cancelled out by a Matt Wardle brace at Roker Park on Saturday afternoon, the Berkhamsted marksman netting the equaliser four minutes into added time despite this ill-tempered match having no second half stoppages.

The Rokermen’s best move of the entire 90 minutes came on 26 minutes when Sam Pemberton played the ball forward up the left channel for Rob Groves whose crossfield pass to Josh Bronti saw him swing the ball back in from the right while Herr turned it past Comrades keeper Ed Farmer from close in.

But four minutes later the visitors were on terms when a cracking 20 yard angled volley from Wardle gave home keeper Brad Gillham no chance.

WIth just five minutes of a fairly stale second half remaining, a Stotfold free kick was played into the Berkhamsted six yard box where three players seemed to get a tough before Herr nodded it over Farmer’s outstretched hand for what everyone expected would be the winner.

But with referee Andy Medock somehow finding an extra four minutes and with the match almost at boiling point, a long punt forward saw Wardle onto it and having left two defenders chasing shadows, he drilled it home for 2-2.

In the Evo-Stik Southern League there was another Premier Division defeat for relegation threatened Arlesey Town who went down 3-0 away to Oxford City.

The goals were scored by Blossom on 34 minutes and Basham two minutes before the break while in the 63rd minute Woodley made the three points safe at 3-0 to the delight of the lion’s share of the 153 spectators.

There were just 98 spectators in the Central Division match at Ashford where Biggleswade Town ran out 2-0 winners thanks to second half goals from Craig Daniel a minute into the new half and Brett Donnelly 21 minutes from the end.

The win ensures the Waders remain in the play-off places having moved up a place into fourth spot on goal-difference at the expense of Bedworth.

Back in the Spartan South Midlands League, relegation threatened Biggleswade United claimed their first Premier Division win in months, 3-0 away to London Tigers at Hillingdon Borough’s stadium while in Division One, Langford ended a miserable past two weeks with a 3-2 win at Stony Stratford Town’s Ostler Lane.

And finally to The Hollow in Division One of the United Counties League where Potton United went down 2-0 to midtable Burton Park Wanderers.
