Waders miss out on a third cup final

Biggleswade Town’s hopes of reaching a third cup final this season evaporated at the Hunts Post Community Stadium on Wednesday night when United Counties League leaders St Neots scored the only goal in the Hinchingbrooke Cup semi-final.

With AFC Kempston Rovers having booked their passage through to the final on Thursday, May 5 with a 3-1 win against Deeping Rangers just 24 hours earlier, the Waders took along 11 of their young Capital League side plus four first teamers although Steve Gentle was still recovering from injury.

With Ryan Foster between the posts, the only goal arrived in the 23rd minute when Saints’ Tony Scully’s angled 25 yard cross-cum-shot found the net.

They made a triple half time substitution while Sam Yalley went close to an equaliser 15 minutes from time.

Manager Chris Nunn was delighted with the whole team’s performance and said: “They were superb against very strong opposition and that team probably won’t ever be playing together again.

“We’ve now got two important games to come to decide who gets home advantage in the play-offs next Thursday.

“I’d also like to congratulate Arlesey Town on winning the league title on behalf of Biggleswade Town Football Club. They’ve been the best side over the 42 games and deserve it.”

The Waders opponents in this year’s North Beds Charity Cup final on Wednesday May 4 at Potton will be Stotfold who received a bye after Wootton Blue Cross withdrew from last night’s semi-final.

The management committee of the Bedfordshire County Football League met on Wednesday night to consider the matter of Elstow Abbey fielding an under age player in their Jubilee Cup semi-final against Kings AFC on March 28 together with six league matches.

After consideration of all the information and evidence available, it was fully accepted 100 per cent that Elstow hadn’t been party to the falsification of the registration form lodged by the club with the league and, as a consequence, the following decisions were made.

The player in question, will not be allowed to register with the County League when he reaches his 16th birthday next month but will now have to wait until January 1, 2012.
