Waders share spoils in the sunshine

Biggleswade had shared the points at Chesham just a few weeks earlier and following this game they have now lost just once in eight games as they head towards midtable safely in the Southern League Premier

It was a rare mistake from Ian Brown that allowed Chesham to take a seventh minute lead. He let a tame shot from Youngs go under his body and roll over the line.

However Waders were soon back it in. It took 20 minutes for Tony Burnett to outpace the defenders, cut in and let loose a shot from almost an impossible angle to level up proceedings.

Back on track, now was the time for Waders to push on but opportunities were rare and Inih Effiong and Sam Merson, Craig Daniel and Burnett were guarded closely by their markers.

There was controversy just past the half hour as Chesham regained the lead. The referee blew for a foul against the boys in green but then waved play on. The Waders defenders had stopped as Youngs grabbed his second of the afternoon. Despite player and loud protests from the crowd the goal stood, leaving a blot on the game as half time approached.

In the second half the Waders played with purpose and a pride in the shirt. Laying siege would be over-egging it, for Chesham had their moments, but Brown didn’t have a save of note to make in the second period.

Biggleswade got their shots in but they were heading high or wide.

On 77 minutes Marsh and King replaced Effiong and Merson who both had had a quiet afternoon by their own high standards. Mark Coulson had a shot so powerful in the 85th minute that the blocker, Chesham’s unfortunate Bruce Wilson had to be replaced and left the field injured.

Time was ticking away when on 88 minutes Nick Beasant barged into Ian Rees to hand a lifeline to Biggleswade from the penalty spot. That proved no problem for Burnett as he netted to secure a brace.

On Saturday Biggleswade Town head west to Cirencester and the following Saturday sees a trip to Dorchester. The next game at the Carlsberg Stadium is on Bank Holiday Monday, March 28, when they host Cambridgeshire side Histon at 3pm.
