Wednersday: Waders go through in FA Cup replay

Biggleswade Town came through their FA Cup preliminary round replay with a 2-1 win away to Haringey & Waltham Development following Saturday’s remarkable 5-5 draw at the Carlsberg Stadium.

Harry Hunt for the Waders off to the perfect start with a goal after just two minutes but Biggleswade skipper Liam Folds put past his own keeper on 20 minutes to square the tie.

However it was Paul Barnes who bagged the winner in the 68th minute to claim a first round qualifying home tie with Waltham Abbey and to pick up the £1,500 prize money.

In the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands Lague, Biggleswade United went down 3-0 away to AFC Dunstable after goals from Courtney Massey on 44 minutes, Terry Billy on 76 and Lee Hayward four minutes form time.

In Bedfordshire County League Division Four action on Wednesday, a lone long range goal from Ickwell & Old Warden Reserves’ Andrew Vallom took his side to a 1-0 home win over Dunton ‘A’.

However Vallom later spoiled his copybook by missing from the penalty spot.

Elsewhere in East Beds Charity Cup quarter-final there were wins for Elstow Abbey and Gamlingay.

The Abbey with first half goals from Aaron Cavill, Tom Pitts and Craig Cameron always in the driving seat at home to Clifton who reduced the arrears to 3-1 with a strike by Mark Gearing 10 minutes from time. Earning them a semi-final tie against Ickwell & Old Warden.

At The Hollow, Gamlingay were comfortable 4-1 winners over Potton United Reserves. Ahead 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Joe Baker and Ben Walker, it was game over on the hour when Matt Wyllie added a third.

United’s chance to stage a late rally then disappeared two minutes later when United’s James Tizard had his spot kick well saved by Gamlingay goalkeeper Phil Sutton and within another two minutes it was 4-0 with a goal from Peter Lodge. United were however to have the last word when Dave Waugh netted them a consolation goal six minutes from time.

Gamlingay now face either Sandy or Caldecote Reserves at the last four stage, they meet at Bedford Road Recreation Ground next Tuesday, September 13 at 6pm.
