Fourth time lucky as Biggy thirds lift cup

This was the fourth year on the bounce that Dave Tysom’s XV had made it to the final and on the previous three occasions had been soundly beaten.

But this time they were on the winning side, beating Datchworth IIIs 6-3.

After dispatching local rivals Hitchin and Letchworth en route to the final and with six consecutive wins under their belts there was much optimism in the side for a result.

The side started well and it what turned out to be a close run contest in the first half, not an inch was given.

Both sides found settling down hard in the opening quarter. It was Datchworth who should have scored but mighty impressive Biggy defence from the likes of Fola, Dev and Fluffy kept the opposition out. Indeed in an effort to keep Datchworth at bay, big Russ sustained a yellow card for his efforts.

But Biggy showed much courage and determination and despite going in 3-0 down at half time the side knew that this tie was well within their grasp.

Turning around, Biggy made holes in the Datchworth defence courtesy of Jimmy Young’s sniping runs and Jimmy Hart’s pin point kicking. Also much to the fore were the two Dave’s, Leslie and Dawe, who both made useful yards.

Again Datchworth thought they had scored after their winger ploughed his way to the line, only to be held up by a combination of Simon Rutt and Jimmy Hart.

Biggy came back with a well taken pen by Hart, levelling the scores. As the game became increasingly fractious Datchworth buckled with a yellow card and then a red for punching.

Biggy seized the moment, Hart popped over the pen with aplomb and they took the lead.

As the clock ran down Harry made more incisive runs, Jack Unite played a fine game and Tom Hill bossed everyone about.

Simon Rutt was cruelly denied a try in the dying moments after a break out from the back of the scrum but more time was used up and they held on to the final whistle.

This was a great reward for Dave Tysom’s side that has finished runners up in the league and now cup winners to boot.

Always playing rugby with a smile on their faces and Biggleswade’s most successful side this season , the team thanked Dave for all his enduring work and commitment to the side and gave a big cheer when he lifted the cup.
