New BMX boys try out their skills

The final round of the British Cycling BMX East 2012 Regional Series hosted by the Ipswich BMX club last Sunday who had the venue ready for an action packed day for the riders and spectators and with clear blue skies the sunshine was almost too much. Over 120 riders registered for the event with Royston having 20 members across the classes.

The Novice classes started the day off with two of Royston’s newest members trying their skills out in the under 7’s where Matthew Smith took 3rd just ahead of Riley Nicholls in 4th. In the Novice 8 – 9 year olds Ben Smith took first place in his class which was combined on the day with the 10-11 Novices to create more competition for the riders.

In the expert classes Joshua Abbott in the 7 year class took 2nd place overall whilst in the 8 year class team mates Harry Evans and Joshua Izzard took 6th and 7th respectively and Louie Silvain to the win in the B final having moved from the Novice classes at this event.

The girls had a variable day with Harriet Alexander taking a great 2nd in the 7-8 Girls class which was noted by the officials who awarded her with the Rider of the Day trophy whilst Ella Tomsett in the 9-10 Girls class was unable to finish after a fall in her second race. As has become normal at this years Regional Series one of the largest class of the day was the male 10 year category which had 4 Rockets competing with Alfie Salmon in 3rd and Bradley Marvel taking 5th in the A final whilst in the B final Kane Davies finished in 2nd ahead of team mate Joshua Richardson-Game in 3rd.

The two Rocket’s riders in the male 12 year class both made the A final with James King taking 1st place and Charlee Davis took 8th. In the 13 year class Myles Fisher took 2nd place whilst in the combined Female 15-16 and Championship (16+) class his sister Chloe Fisher claiming 4th place overall and first in her own class.

In the Masters class Lee Alexander finished in 2nd as did Sam King in the 35-39 Cruiser category with Matt Salmon coming home in 3rd.

The next event on the BMX calendar is the biggest domestic race of the year – The British Championships - being held in Cheddar on September 15/16th. The Rockets expect to have 15 riders taking part with some making their first trip to this event which will attract over 1000 riders from across the country.
