Another one bites the dust

The giant chimneys and cooling towers of Little Barford’s old electricity power station were blown up using 60lb of explosives 25 years ago this week. The three separate explosions that demolished them were heard for miles around and produced vast clouds of brick dust.

The spectacle of three huge brick-built chimneys and two cooling towers being razed to the ground brought scores of spectators and was managed by demolition experts with tight security in operation to ensure everyone’s safety.

A viewing point was set up which people had to be at two hours before the first explosion and they were not allowed to leave until 15 minutes after the last.
