Capturing life through the lens

It was the well-known late Chronicle photographer George Skevington’s 80th birthday 25 years ago this week. The veteran lensman spent 15 years with the Biggleswade Chronicle and another 16 working for the Beds Times group. After retiring at the age of 66, he carried on snapping, with photos still occasionally appearing in the newspaper.

During the war George took photographs for the RAF and as a newsman he could recall capturing everything from crashes to the Royal Family.

He celebrated his 80th year with a family get together at The Chequers in Wrestlingworth.

“I’m going to keep on taking pictures. People keep coming to me to ask me to take their annual group line-ups and things like that” he said at the time.

His photos still crop up here in the Chronicle office – a legacy to the newspaper’s history from an old professional.
