There was a commemorative service and a parade to mark the outbreak of the war on Sunday where a centenary plaque was unveiled by Mr Colin Osborne, the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, at Sandy’s public war memorial.

Councillor Will Jackson, Sandy Town Mayor, said: “As Town Mayor I was immensely proud to take part in the commemorative events this weekend.

“It was especially moving to see so many young people participating and recognising that the sacrifice of previous generations still affects the way we live now.

“I hope residents will notice the Town Council’s new interpretation board in Bedford Road and read a bit more about Sandy’s war experience as the centenary commemorations continue.”

In addition to the parade, Sandy Royal British Legion took part in ‘Lights Out’, a nationwide event encouraging the public to turn off their lights between 10 and 11pm on Monday.
