Cricketing characters recalled

He believes that the first large picture on the left dates from around 1974/75 and named, back row, left to right: the late Coun Andy Smythe, ?, ?, Nigel Keeping (aka Noggin) whose dad was Shefford’s chief fireman and Jack Guthrie.

In the front row, Dave named: ?, ‘Matey’ Smythe (Andy’s son), ?, ?, ?, ?, and Paul ‘Polax’ Stevens.

Dave also spotted Jack Guthrie in the earlier second large photo, third left in the front row. Dave believes this was taken in the 1950s or 60s and told us that Jack is well known locally as a talented woodcarver whose daughter now owns the Nearly Nouveau shop in Shefford High Street.

Dave believes the first small photo on the left was taken in the early 1980s. Polax appears again first left in the back row, and fifth left is Ansell Carter. In the front row, left to right Dave has named Gregg Wright, ‘Snowy’, ?, and Raymond Ackson or Ackerston who was known as ‘Ackers’.

It is believed the last small photo was taken in the 1990s. Third left in the back row is Paul Stevens while Noggin makes a second appearance fifth from left. Dave thinks that Peter Inskipp may be fourth from left in the front row.
