Dustmen dumped luckless Clifton’s new kit

Front page news 25 years ago this week was the sorry tale of how Clifton Sunday Soccer Team’s hopes for a change of luck were inadvertently dashed by dustbin men.

The team had not had a win for 14 games but when sponsors IBC bought them all a shiny new kit, they believed their fortunes were about to change.

However, manager Robert MacKay left the kit in a laundry sack outside his co-manager’s house which the refuse workers mistook for a bag of rubbish and promptly disposed of.

A gutted MacKay said at the time: “Nothing goes right for us.”

But although the lads had to play in their old kit the following Sunday, it wasn’t all bad news as this time they managed a 2:2 draw and were hoping to get replacement new kit which they were going to “guard with their lives”.
