End of an era for Stratton Park Estate

Twenty five years ago, the last remains of the original Stratton Park Estate in Biggleswade were pulled down by developers when the stable buildings were demolished. The stables had been the only surviving part of the original estate. The mansion house, which was used during World War Two as an army base, had been knocked down in 1960.

Rumour had it at the time that the land there was riddled with secret tunnels which were used as priest holes and escape routes during the English Civil War, and the most remarkable archaeological find there was a huge skeleton still clad in armour.

There was much sadness at the loss of the buildings, which were not listed. Parkhomes subsequently redeveloped the site.
