Historical letter finds new home

Memory Lane readers may recall our article a couple of months ago on a 100-year-old letter that came to light recently. It was written by explorer George Percy Abbott, a member of Captain Robert Scott’s ill-fated Polar Expedition, to the grandfather of Richard Day (April 5, 2013).

The identity of the letter writer was identified by the Polar Research Institute in Cambridge.

At first glance it appears to have been signed ‘Percy’ but in fact George used his customary nickname of ‘Tiny’ when signing letters to friends: an ironic reference to the fact he was such a huge man.

The letter has now been presented to the Polar Research Institute for their collection and the photo here shows Richard with his brother Tony and sister Diana handing it over to Naomi Boneham, archivist at the institute.
