Hope was in sight for parking chaos

Biggleswade train station parking was in the news 25 years ago this week when hopes were expressed at cutting parking chaos as work began on the new car park.

British Rail was reported to be spending £100,000 to provide 110 extra spaces for commuters on the site of the former coal yard in Station Road, Biggleswade to help relieve the problem of on-street parking.

Electrification of the line the year previously, in May 1987, was cited as the cause of increased parking issues as it had encouraged around 30% more commuters than before to use the line from Biggleswade.

The new fully lit car park with its pay and display system was welcomed by Coun Duncan Strachan who said “It’s good news for Biggleswade”. But added that it would help rather than cure the trouble, concluding that spaces at the Gloster Saro development and a pay and display scheme for the Market Square were more important for the future of the town.
