Melvyn’s mystery solved

Judith White, nee Bonfield contacted us to say that she is the mystery little girl in the childrens’ photograph taken at Melvyn Bryant’s 1947 birthday party (Memory Lane, April 18).

She said: “As soon as I saw the picture I knew it was me and I knew most of the names of the children. Two of my sisters were also in the picture, Roma and Moyra. Most of the children were at Mr Saunders’ school in Shortmead Street”.

When Judith was 11, she went on to study at Hitchin Convent with Melvyn’s late wife Dawn.

“Dawn was tall and lovely looking” says Judith. “She and Melvyn lived at Windy Ridge, Caldecote for years and we lived in Ickwell.”

It was quite by chance that Judith saw the photograph at all as she now lives in Eastbourne but her daughter bought her a subscription to the Biggleswade Chronicle for her birthday.

“So many of the names brought back lots of memories. I would love to see them all again” says Judith.

She sent us this photograph of her which was taken the same year of the party, 1947, when she was nine years old. It was from a sitting at Drysdales in Biggleswade and Judith says: “Mother told me to keep my mouth closed because I had lost my two front teeth!”

If you would like to get in touch with Judith, she would be delighted to hear from you and can be emailed at [email protected].
