Memories of Monday George

RON Bowles would like to know if any readers recall George Whitby, a trader who travelled around the locality during the 1950s.

“He sold pots and pans and other kitchen requirements, including paraffin oil. He was known to us at Caldecote as Monday George and was a friend to all” says Ron. “George was a keen cyclist and Luton FC supporter. He would cycle in all weathers to watch home matches. Sadly it was on such a journey that George met with a fatal accident at Barton Cutting. There is a plaque at Luton football ground remembering him.”

George’s motto was ‘Why worry wise working women with weak wares when Whitby’s wonderful warranted wares will wear well where wear’s wanted.’

He appears above in a Sandy wartime photo of St John’s Ambulance Brigade published on September 20, 2007. He is in the front row with Ted Chillery and Sandy High Street butcher Les Linford.
