Rallies made residents’ life a misery

Rowdy motorcyle gangs racing over private land on the outskirts of Sandy were making residents’ life a misery 25 years ago in the news this week.

Nearly 100 bikers were regularly converging on The Hollow at Cox’s Hill, part of the Pym family’s estate.

One resident said: “It’s totally horrendous. This Sunday there were 70 riders there with vans, trailers, four-wheel drive, cross-country vehicles, the lot. If it is like that on a wet Sunday in April, what will it be like later in the year?”

Lord Pym subsequently appealed to the chief constable to help stop the noisy trespassers and the family’s managing agents, surveyors Smith Woolley said: “The Pym family are deeply concerned about the problem. They have never given any motorcyclists permission to use the area and we are working with police to find a solution.”

Police responded that action was in hand but were keeping ‘precise details under wraps’.
