Scenes of town in days gone by

Long time residents of Chronicle Country may well recall these two Biggleswade scenes from half a century ago.

We’ve dug them out of the Chronicle’s archives and we believe they date from the late 1950s, although perhaps an eagle-eyed reader can help us nail a more accurate date?

A horse fair was a regular feature of Market Square life back then and one of our pictures shows this in action.

Our next picture is of a view that has changed a little less. It is in the High Street looking west towards the parish church. The war memorial was sited on this corner with Shortmead Street - this was later moved to the middle of the square. In fact you can just see the offices now housing the Biggleswade Chronicle on the right hand side.
