Sixties season team for town’s United FC

This great team photo was taken either during the 1960-61 or 61-62 football season and shows the players for Biggleswade United.

Now 50 years old, it was kindly brought in by ex-player Noel Murphy.

In the back row are Robert Cooper, Noel Murphy, Alan Smith, Keneth Sermons, James Philbrook and Kenneth Gale.

In the front row are Colin Pepper, Robert Course, Alan Bartram, Brian Albone and Celestine Roberts. Alan worked for Elphick’s Printers in Shortmead Street who published the Biggleswade Chronicle.

“The team colours were claret and blue” explains Noel whose father supplied their kit from the family’s sports shop W Murphy & Son, also in Shortmead Street.
