Town protests as historic building is demolished

One of Sandy’s historic buildings was set to be bulldozed 25 years ago this week despite a massive protest from the town.

Mid Beds planners had agreed that the old St Swithun’s School in St Neots Road, which had been empty since the new school building was opened in Ivel Road, had to come down. St Albans Diocese, who owned the site, had been given the go ahead to sell it to developers and there were plans for 25 sheltered homes for the elderly to be built in its place.

Sandy resident Lou Cameron organised a petition against the development with around 1,000 names, all of whom wanted to see the old building become a community centre.

He said: “I could have got many more names. The school is part of Sandy’s heritage and the council has ignored the people of Sandy” he said at the time.

The petition did not save the old school buildings, opened in the 1920s, and they were demolished. Today, there is housing on the site.
