When 50s Colts were united in victory

These two photographs mark the occasion when Biggleswade Town Colts won the Unity Cup during the 1956/57 season.

The photo and cuttings were kindly brought in by ex-captain of the team Mick Swannell of Waresley who says: “They never lost a match that year”.

The Colts beat Langford Juniors 4-1 at Fairfield to win the cup, having been two goals ahead at half time. Langford had shown some promising moves in the opening half but Biggleswade took the lead after 22 minutes.

The first two goals were scored by Turner and Gale and they apparently opened the second half in great style with Price netting a goal in the fist attack. Handescombe in the Langford goal had a busy spell but dealt confidently with some likely-looking shots. Munsey played the fourth goal.

In the back row, from left to right are Charlie Maile (manager), F Sutton, Mick Swannell, E Bowles, C Wren, P Norman, and Percy Bowles (trainer). While in the front row, left to right are D Harrison, C Turner, D Gale, B Price, C Munsey and B Curchin.

In the second photo, the cup is being presented by Mr G Giddings, chairman of the Youth League. At the time a collection of £2 16s 3d was made.

Thanks go to Mick for this glimpse into Biggleswade’s young and illustrious sporting past.
