When the circus kids came to town

Traffic and people apparently “choked the streets” 25 years ago this week when 1,000 local children aged between three and 13 poured into the market place for the climax of an Arts in Education study of the circus.

Organised by Edward Peak Middle School’s maths teacher Dave King, the event included children from Northill, Langford, Dunton, Southlands, Caldecote, Lawnside, The Lawns, Sunnyside and Hitchmead Schools.

Youngsters in a variety of circus costumes packed the town centre for a gala procession and there were street performances from London clown Tony Watts, alias Rubberface, stilt walkers and fire eater Pete Belcher with his Touring Inferno act amongst others.
