This year 1,200 Biggleswade District Scouts paraded through Biggleswade on Sunday afternoon (April 27).

The parade stretched for nearly half a mile and no single church was big enough to hold all of the beavers, cubs and scouts so services were held at both St Andrew’s Church and Trinity Methodist Church.

The commemorative services, conducted by the Reverend Guy Scott at St Andrew’s and the Reverend Andrew Hollins at Trinity Methodist, were an opportunity for all the scouts to renew their promises in a tradition that goes back to the beginning of scouting more than 100 years ago.

It coincided with similar ceremonies all over the world for the 36m scouts who have St George as their patron saint.

The scouts beavers, cubs and scouts paraded to and from the churches, led by the sea cadets’ band. The colour party, with the flag of St George, consisted of Emilia De Luca, 14, Chloe Jefferd, 16, and Luke Hitchcock, 13, who will all attend the World Scout Jamboree in Japan next year.

On the same day Kieron Little was presented with his Queen’s Scout Award at Biggleswade Academy.
