Can you help make Gamlingay care home resident’s 100th birthday extra special?

A care home in Gamlingay is appealing for cards in a bid to make a resident’s 100th birthday extra special.

Potton View Care Home, on Potton Road in Gamlingay, is preparing to mark the milestone birthday of resident Dorothy Hinton, who celebrates her centenary on October 11.

Dorothy moved to Potton View Care Home in 2024 and the care home is inviting people to send cards and best wishes.

Dorothy was born in the village of Croydon near Gamlingay in October 1926, going into service at the age of 14 for a lady in Hatley St George.

She then worked in hairdressing before marrying her husband William, who died in 2000.

During the Second World War, Dorothy wrote to soldiers and knitted socks for them, as well as helping at the Navy Army and Air Force Institute’s canteen based at RAF Tempsford.

The family moved to a council house in Gamlingay in 1962, and Dorothy has lived in the village ever since.

She became very involved at St Mary’s Church, where she taught at the Sunday school, helped start a regular coffee morning and formed a sewing group which raised money through sponsored knits and running a marmalade stall.

A highlight of her supporting village events came when she dressed as a St Trinian’s schoolgirl on a gala float one year.

Dorothy has two children Christian and Yvonne, two grandchildren Lucy and Catherine, and two great grandchildren Anna and William.

Cards and good wishes can be sent to Dorothy Hinton, c/o Potton View Care Home, Gamlingay, SG19 3LW.
