It is understood that the old pumps kept tripping, with CBC Cllr Hayley Whitaker describing the waste as "bubbling up from the ground" and the "worst" she's ever seen it (September 3).

But Cllr Steven Watkins, executive member for assets at CBC, said: "Following a further issue at the Dunton Lane pumping station, we investigated the cause and put additional measures in place.

"Two new pumps were installed on September 3 to improve the reliability of the system and reduce the risk of further leaks.

“We are sorry for the inconvenience these incidents have caused residents and businesses.

"We recognise the concern this has caused and want to reassure the local community that we are treating the matter as a priority.”

The pumps are connected to Dunton Lane pumping station.
