Are you living with a terminal condition? Does a loved one have a diagnosis, or do you have experience of palliative care? Your views could help improve local provision.

People from Biggleswade and across the East of England are being invited to take part in a crucial online survey, which will help influence the way end of life care is delivered in the region.

The anonymous survey, which has been organised by the country’s leading end of life charity – Marie Curie – in partnership with NHS England, wants to hear from people with experience in this area. You could be directly affected, such as living with a terminal diagnosis, care for someone who is, or have experience of someone who had palliative care at the end of their life.

The new survey will identify good practice, but also identify priorities which people would like to see worked upon. This could lead to long-term change in the way provision is carried out.

And for individuals, the experience of taking part in the survey can be powerful. One woman, who lost a sister, said: “I feel very grateful to have had the opportunity to talk with the team at Marie Curie about what my sister went through at the end of her life.  It has not only helped me to process things a little, but also given me the opportunity to speak out for her – something I was not able to do at the time.  I hope my contribution to this study can ensure more people receive the dignity and respect we all deserve at end of life.”

While some people may find the process cathartic, others may find it brings back feelings and emotions from difficult times. As such, Marie Curie has a helpline that people can call if affected. The free support line is for the bereaved, or others experiencing difficult emotions. Call 0800 090 2309. It is open from Monday to Friday 8am-6pm, and Saturday 11am-5pm.

This is in addition to the 61,800 people Marie Curie helped last year, through its support and information line, support in the home and hospice care.

Marie Curie East of England Associate Director Strategic Partnerships & Services Jonathan Clemo said: “We are inviting people who have been affected by terminal illness to take part in this survey to help us highlight what is working well but also help identify priority areas for improvement.

“Ultimately, by taking part in the survey, you will be helping to ensure that more people get the best possible care and support at the end of life, reflecting what’s most important to them,” he added.

By taking part, your views will be shared with those in charge of palliative care in the East of England, and will help form new policies.

If you are over 18, and have any connection or experience of end of life care, Marie Curie would welcome your help. The survey takes just 15 minutes to complete, and can be done any time from now till September 30.
