The thefts happened between 2.30am and 3am – with police saying a girl in pyjamas on an e-vehicle was spotted removing them.

A Bedfordshire Police spokeswoman said: "We received a report just after 12pm on Friday that a group of young people had been involved in anti-social behaviour in Market Square, Sandy in the early hours of the morning.

"The incident happened between 2.30am and 3am and one girl dressed in pyjamas and on an e-scooter or e-bike was seen removing the Remembrance display poppies."

Sandy Town Council said: "We put a great deal of time, effort and care into organising events, improving the town and doing things for the benefit of the community.

"The Remembrance poppies are just one example of work that goes on behind the scenes.

"If your children were out and about at this time, perhaps it's worth having a conversation with them."

The council says it will continue to do its "best for the benefit of the community" – but that anti-social behaviour and vandalism is "disheartening".

It added: "Please respect the hard work that goes into making the town a place that we can all be proud of."

Enquiries are ongoing and anyone who has any information can report to police online quoting reference 184 of October 30.
