Midweek football: Arlesey extend their lead while Waders close in on second spot

Table-topping Arlesey Town extended their Central Division advantage over Hitchin to four points on Tuesday night thanks to a 2-1 win against fifth in the table Slough Town.

An Armadilo Stadium crowd numbering 182 saw Lee Allinson give the Blues an 11th minute lead and while Burnell levelled for the visitors just before the half hour mark, Arlesey skipper Derek Brown bagged what turned out to be the winner in the 34th minute.

Third in the Southern League standings after Saturday’s 5-1 win against Atherstone, Biggleswade Town also closed to within a point of second placed Hitchin following a 3-2 win away to Ashford Town on Tuesday.

The Waders went ahead after four minutes through Ashley Fuller but Nanetti levelled for the hosts after 13 and he then put the Middlesex side ahead seven minutes later.

However James Freshwater made it 2-2 a minute into the second half while Harry Hunt bagged the Waders’ 54th minute winner.

With fourth in the table Daventry Town being held in a 2-2 home draw by Bedworth United, it means that Biggleswade have now opened a four point gap on them although the Northants side still have one game in hand.

In the Spartan South Midlands League’s Premier Division, all three Chronicle Country side lost their midweek matches.

Biggleswade United went down 3-0 at Tring Athletic while Stotfold lost 2-0 at home to Hertford Town.

As for bottom of the table Langford there was a crushing 8-0 defeat when they travelled to Holmer Green.

The Reds just managing to scrap together a side after several players have decided to leave the club after what appears to be a disagreement between them and the management.

Langford are in action again tomorrow (Thursday) when they travel to Tring Athletic for the semi-final of the South Midlands Floodlit Cup.
