Saturday football: Arlesey bag crucial home win, Waders lose

A 17th minute strike from Chris Marsh proved just enough to give Arlesey Town their fourth consecutive Southern League win and their third Premier Division double on Saturday.

With Arlesey and their visitors, relegation rivals Evesham United, level on points but with the injury hit Blues ahead on goal-difference after having played the same amount of games, it was a slightly dour contest with neither side really excelling.

And the only goal came from a Cam Mawer throw-in on the left deep into Evesham’s half with Marsh racing in between two defenders before drilling an angled effort just inside Robins’ goalkeeper Daniel Platt’s near post for what turned out to be the match winner.

Now points above the drop zone, Arlesey (who jumped four places up the table and away from the relegation zone) are away to Bashley on Tuesday before another key game next Saturday at home to Stourbridge.

Biggleswade Town were away to championship chasing Slough Town where they went down 2-1 to a stoppage time winner.

Brett Donnelly put the Waders 1-0 up in the minute but the Rebels’ Murphy levelled with five minutes to go and with the game two minutes into stoppage time, Abbey snatched Slough’s winner.

Meanwhile in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division, Biggleswade United went down 2-1 at home to Aylesbury United while Premier Division side Stotfold lost 1-0 away to Holmer Green.

And finally in the United Counties League, Potton United lost 4-2 at home in Division One to Northampton ON Chenecks whose Enuino Furtado bagged a first half hat-trick, an Adam Dunville spot kick making it 3-1 at half time only for the visitors to add a fourth before Nick Cooper pulled back a second for the hosts.
