Saturday football: Arlesey strike late in FA Cup win

It was a case of third time lucky for Arlesey Town’s Drew Roberts after the striker twice hit the Dulwich Hamlet crossbar before finally netting the only goal in the 90th minute to put the Blues into the next round of the FA Cup.

There were 156 spectators at the Armadillo Stadium for the second round qualifying tie and it was clear from the start that the Ryman South side had come to play football.

But in what was becoming a frustrating match for the spectators, the Blues just edged it and Roberts’ amazing 30 yard strike at the death was just about deserved after he had hit the woodwork with two earlier efforts.

There was good news in the Southern League’s Central Division as goals from skipper Steven Gentle in the 39th minute and Jonathan Woolf midway through the second half sealed all three points for Biggleswade Town on their travels to Fleet Town in front of 101 spectators.

In the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League, winless Biggleswade United claimed their fifth draw, this tome 2-2 away to Hillingdon Borough with goals from Sean Murray and Gus Stewart who recently left Stotfold’s Roker Park to join the Second Meadow squad.

And his former club were really in the doldrums at home as Oxhey Jets hammered the Rokermen 4-0 with gals from Butler (two), Bywater and Putman.

However there was better news from Forde Park where Langford enjoyed a 4-2 home win against Sun Postal Sports with goals from Jack Gregson, Ross, Haskins and a Gary Walker double.

And finally to Potton United who are up to fifth place in UCL Division One following their third win in five league outing after they beat Buckingham Town 2-1 at The Hollow.
