V-ery entertaining gang

Taken at The Limes in Biggleswade during the Second World War, at first glance this photograph appears to be of a wedding party.

However, the group are in fact members of a local drama society which was active at that time and known as The V Gang. And they are dressed up here for one of their public performances.

The group was organised by the late Rex Huckle, who also appears in the picture.

From left to right in the back row are:

Donna Huckle, Betty Munday, Sid Watts, Audrey – (the groom), Joan Stumbly (the bride), Joan Pepper, Rex Huckle and Iris Page.

In the front from the left are Hazel Jenny and the two little bridesmaids are Shirley Watts and June Stumbly.

June and Joan Stumbly were wartime evacuees who came from London to live with Rex Huckle’s mother.

The photograph originally appeared in the Bedfordshire Times and was kindly sent in by Mrs S Humberstone of Biggleswade.
